Man Has No Right to Subjugate His Wife
Makkah: The Imam and Khateeb of the Haram Mosque, Sheikh Saleh bin Humeid has said that Islam requires from every Muslim to behave properly and decently with his wife.
“A man’s guardianship (Qawama) over his wife (as described in the Holy Qur’an) does not mean any kind of subjugation or injustice or belittling or depriving of her rights. On the other hand, it warrants decent behavior and guaranteeing of her legitimate rights,” he said.
In his Friday sermon at the Grand Mosque recently, Sheikh Saleh bin Humeid, who is also the president of the Shoura Council, asserted that husband and wife are guardians in their own domains. A man has the responsibility to look after his wife and children while the woman has to take care of the household affairs. “Both should behave with mutual respects, compassion and mercy. The husband should not deprive her of due rights or role as his life partner. Mutual understanding, consul-tation and dignified treatment are essential for the success of family life,” he observed.
